Family and Group Camping Tents
Camping tents are an important investment. This guide will help you to make an informed decision.
First determine what type of camping you'll be doing, if you camp for 1-2 weeks you will need more space than a weekend camper, and even if you are summer camper make sure that you prepare yourself for the worst possible type of weather you'll encounter.
Camping tents are rated by the number of people they can accommodate, but these ratings do not account for comfort or storage, when they say it's a 5-person tent, they mean 5 people laying down in the sleeping area and nothing else. If you are backpacking or hiking and weight is a big concern, then use the rating system, but for family camping think bigger.
For smaller camping tents and weekend campers calculate the tent size by going 1-2 sizes bigger than you need.
For families and larger tents divide the "person rating" by 2 so that you will have sufficient room in case you have to stay inside because of inclement weather, also bare in mind that more room makes extended trips easier with plenty of room for dry gear and kids stuff.
